Expanded Hungarian Coverage in the NameAPI Database

Few European naming traditions pack as much structure into a name as Hungarian. Besides using the Eastern name order — the family name comes first, the given name second, Hungarian routinely folds honorifics, marital status, and generational markers directly into the name string. That makes accurate parsing both a challenge and a rewarding one, and we've expanded our NameAPI database to meet it.

The update introduces support for 60 Hungarian titles and salutations, covering academic degrees, official positions, religious honorifics, military ranks, and common forms of address.

Hungarian also has a distinctive system of married names. The suffix -né, approximately meaning “wife of,” can be attached to a husband’s family name or full name. For example, Kovács Jánosné traditionally identifies the wife of Kovács János. Without culture-specific recognition, such constructions can easily be parsed incorrectly.

Other examples include generational qualifiers like ifjabb (“junior”) and idősebb (“senior”) distinguish people with the same name who may also occur in their abbreviated forms, ifj. and id.

We've added a range of Hungarian company legal forms — including Kft. (Korlátolt Felelősségű Társaság), Zrt. (zártkörűen működő részvénytársaság), and Bt. (Betéti Társaság), — so business names are correctly identified as organizations rather than persons. Rounding out the update is a set of Hungarian professions, including plural forms, so occupational terms in a name field are recognized for what they are.

Hungarian shows just how much meaning a single name field can carry — order, courtesy, marital status, generation, and even mortality, all in one line. And this is only a step in our ongoing effort to deepen coverage across cultures and scripts, making NameAPI ever more powerful for international name parsing.
